Adidas and Orlando Pirates football club today launched a new look home and away kit for the 2011/2012 season. The players will wear the new jersey for the first time during the 2011 Vodacom Challenge in their opening fixture against Tottenham Hotspur in Mbombela on July 19.

Following the popularity and success of last season’s jersey, adidas has stuck to the same clean and classic look with attention to smaller design details on the jersey.

“We worked very hard with the club to ensure that we produce a world class product for a world class club. This season we decided to use the same design for both the home and away jerseys,” says Kevin Jooste, the Football Category Manager at adidas South Africa.

adidas and Orlando Pirates always like to do something bold and unexpected and this season they have produced a red away jersey which is also set to be a hit with the fans.

“The feedback we received from last season’s jersey was very positive and so we decided to remain with a clean and classic design. Orlando Pirates has a great tradition of pushing the envelope in jersey design and I believe we have done that yet again this year. We are excited by this design and we hope the Orlando Pirates faithful will embrace the new jersey and wear it with pride,” says Nkosana Khoza, the Marketing Director at Orlando Pirates Football Club.

According to Jooste, there are three key features that make the new Orlando Pirates jersey unique.”

There is the collar detail using hidden buttons and the Orlando Pirates wording print on the back. More importantly, the base layer material used is lighter than the fabric used on previous jerseys and the jersey design is completed with contrast three-stripe stitching as well as skull and crossbones embossing on the back – which brings out the finer detail,” says Jooste.

Both jerseys feature Climacool Technology- a combination of performance fabrics, open mesh and ventilation channels which keep cool air flowing in and heat and sweat flowing out. Climacool works by considering how and where the body produces heat and sweat, focussing on specific fabric and garment features in those zones. The effect is that athletes stay dry, comfortable and perform at their peak in even the most heated competitions.
Bucs’ marketing director Nkosana Khoza was also on hand to express the club’s delight at the new kit.

Adidas has given Orlando Pirates a new look home and away kit for the 2010/2011 season which kicks off with the Telkom Charity Cup this weekend.

The most significant feature of the new Orlando Pirates jersey is the return to a clean, classic look which includes a collar for the first time in many seasons.

“For the home jersey -we took inspiration from previous Orlando Pirates jerseys –particularly the very first jersey donned by the club in 1937 –which featured a white collar. More importantly, we had a lot of close interaction with the club to make sure that we produce a world class product for a world class club,” says Kevin Jooste, the Football Category Manager at adidas South Africa.

However, adidas and the club also wanted to do something bold and unexpected and the two parties used the away jersey to achieve this.

“This away jersey will have a strong appeal to those who want something beyond the traditional –incorporating red stripes on white,” adds Jooste.

Both jerseys feature climacool technology- a combination of performance fabrics, open mesh and ventilation channels which keep cool air flowing in and heat and sweat flowing out. Climacool works by considering how and where the body produces heat and sweat, and focus’s specific fabric and garment features in those zones. The effect is that athletes stay dry, comfortable and perform at their peak in even the most heated competitions.

The jersey will be available in retail shops from Friday, 06th of August, 2010.

ORLANDO PIRATES AMONGST TOP TWENTY GLOBAL TEAMS FOR MUPC FINALS

Posted on Friday, July 30, 2010 in Football

Orlando Pirates’ youth squad ready to take on international teams at annual Manchester United Premier Cup Global Finals

Manchester, United Kingdom, is preparing to welcome some of the most talented young footballers on the planet for the World Finals of the Manchester United Premier Cup.  Over 9,400 teams started on the journey last summer, to reach the final stages of a competition which will see the top twenty under-15 teams battle for the title of the MUPC Champions of the World from 4 – 7 August.

The under-15 Orlando Pirates squad will depart on Saturday to represent South Africa at the most prestigious under-15 tournament in the world.  The squad has been going through their paces at Nike’s new Football Training Centre in Soweto, ensuring that they are in optimum shape ahead of the tournament.

Orlando Pirates have vast experience at MUPC, and in this world championship year, are particularly determined to improve on previous results.  “We have developed specialized training sessions with a different technical focus for each player.  Although we hope to improve on our previous performances, our main concern in Manchester will be to reduce the pressure on our young players to succeed,” said Augusto Palacios, under-15 Coach, Orlando Pirates.

Originally founded by Nike in 1993, Premier Cup was taken to new heights ten years later when Manchester United added their name to the tournament where youngsters – from grassroots teams to some of the biggest names in football – meet in the ultimate test of their abilities, their passion and their desire to win in the Manchester United Premier Cup.

Over a million youngsters have enjoyed the MUPC experience to date, many going on to become global superstars. No fewer than 25 tournament “old boys” were called up to represent their country in South Africa- including an incredible SIX players in Spain’s championship-winning side, namely Torres, Fábregas, Piqué, “Xavi” Hernández, Iker Casillas and winning goal-scorer Andrés Iniesta.

Iniesta was Tournament MVP and also scored the winning ‘golden goal” in 1999 as FC Barcelona lifted their first Premier Cup World Trophy:  “Premier Cup is a “dream come true” for young footballers. Such an intense level of competition is a great opportunity to test and improve your abilities against some of the best young players in the world. You should take pride in your performance and work hard for your team – every second of every match.”

“Obviously I wish the team from Barcelona all the best – but to every young footballer travelling to Manchester: Give it your all and make the most of this opportunity to pursue your dreams – your future starts here!”

FC Barcelona was the first team to lift the trophy for a second time.  Brazil’s 2000 Premier Cup World Champions Internaçional may be looking to secure a 2nd World Finals trophy for their cabinet.  FC Porto won the inaugural edition back in 1994 before the tournament went global in 1997 and have since only reached 2nd place, but are on a winning streak after beating FC Barcelona in this year’s tournament in Bilbao whilst six times World Finalists Paris Saint-Germain are determined to improve on their best finish to date, second place in 2005.

2009 Runners-up SV Werder Bremen battled their way through three penalty shoot-outs in Germany’s MUPC Finals in Berlin to qualify for Manchester.  In the light of last year’s defeat by Sao Paulo, Coach Marco Grote cites South American teams as the most dangerous.

Host team Manchester United’s best showing to date was when they reached the final at Old Trafford back in 2004, only to lose out to local rivals Manchester City. This year’s UK qualifiers are Newcastle United, at the final stages for the first time this year, alongside Italian qualifiers Torino FC who secured their place after beating FC Juventus in a thrilling 4-2 final encounter.

Colo Colo will represent Chile for the fourth time in Manchester and aim for a top ten finish.

Turkish football Academy Bucaspor were surprise winners of the European Qualification tournament in Denmark.

Other teams qualifying for Manchester for the first time this year include Pachuca FC from Mexico, Japan’s Kyoto Sanga FC, Sutherland Sharks FC from Australia, India’s Shillong Lajong FC and Malaysian team MSS Kedah.

China’s Changchun Yatai FC narrowly won their place in Manchester with skilful displays throughout their national tournament; whilst three times Korean MUPC Champions Ulsan Hyundai Middle School cruised into this year’s World Finals with a stunning 4-1 final match.

Another team with a long journey to Manchester is the Right to Dream Academy from Ghana. Academy Manager Andy Farrant hopes the team can improve on previous 5th & 3rd place finishes, but admits: “As always in tournament conditions, the draw will be crucial. We just hope our boys perform at their best, it’s impossible to ask for any more than that. If their best can take us all the way to the final, then we will be delighted of course, but if not, we can still be satisfied that we gave it our all, and that the boys could do no more in their pursuit of victory.”

NIKE UNVEILS “THE CHIEFS OF SOWETO” LIMITED EDITION T-SHIRT

Posted on Thursday, February 18, 2010 in Kit and Apparel

The hotly contested local rivalry in South African football comes to a head at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates lock horns in the thrilling Soweto Derby. To commemorate this showcase fixture Nike has launched a special Kaizer Chiefs “Chiefs of Soweto” limited edition t-shirt as an opportunity to show support during this traditional sporting moment on the South African football calendar.

Chiefs of Soweto

“The “Chiefs of Soweto” limited edition t-shirt forms part of the Kaizer Chiefs 40th Anniversary celebration and pays homage to the Amakoshi and its legends that have contributed to making the Soweto Derby one of the most intense and passionate events in South Africa,” says Anwar Jappie, Football Category Director for Nike South Africa. “As a brand we strive to add excitement around key sporting moments and we hope this t-shirt will assist supporters to really connect with their team this weekend.”

Chiefs of Soweto

The t-shirt was locally designed by Amicollective, a Cape-based studio specialising in design, illustration, animation and fine art.  The limited edition t-shirt is a collaborative effort where the designers chose to use a hand drawn approach with thick outlines in black to emulate the way Kaizer Chiefs fans hand manufacture their fan gear. It was vital for the design team to give the artwork a human quality that fans could relate to.

“The brief from Nike was very clear with a firm focus on the Kaizer Chiefs supporter,” says Kris Hewitt, also known as Kronk, Designer, Amicollective. “This is a responsibility that cannot be taken lightly, as football fans are not easily fooled and are very knowledgeable about their club. We definitely looked to the fans for inspiration, as Chiefs fans are amongst the most vibrant and well costumed fans around. Their slogans and handmade approach to their supporter gear was incredibly inspiring. This shirt is meant to confront the Orlando Pirates supporters in and out of the stadium, to show the pride and heritage of Kaizer Chiefs and pay homage to the loyalty of the Kaizer Chiefs fans.”

Chiefs of Soweto

The T-shirts will be available in-store before the weekend’s Soweto Derby, from Wednesday 17th February in Nike-Only Stores and other selected retail outlets, retailing at R199.
